Although Virginia had been freed from having to beg Emma's favor every time she needed her drawers removed, she kept up the habit of obedience to the maid, carrying out small errands when asked. Oftentimes they proved only to be weak pretexts in order to get Virginia alone, so that Emma could insist on checking that her plug was still firmly in place or make up some other reason Virginia must expose herself.

Virginia told herself that she only did these things to avoid punishment. However Virginia never mentioned these interludes to Mr. Hayes, even though she was fairly certain that they were not sanctioned by him. In truth, she would have missed these little rushes of heart-pounding excitement if Emma had been ordered to cease.

One afternoon Emma handed her two dresses when passing Virginia in the hallway, telling her to bring them up to Mrs. Hayes' dressing room. Virginia took the clothing readily, her cunny twitching in expectation as she hurried towards the family's rooms.

She knocked and waited on Mrs. Hayes' door but there was no answer and so she slid inside, passing through the outer room to enter the luxurious dressing chamber. Unsure where the dresses belonged, Virginia held them and waited, wondering how long she should give Emma. Finally the outer door opened and Virginia bit her lip excitedly.

But the maid didn't enter the inner room, instead there was some rustling and then a low voice.

“Oh, Augustus, you do not know how I suffer when you cannot come to me.”

Virginia clapped a hand over mouth when she realized it was Mrs. Hayes, addressing a man not her husband.

“My dearest Daisy, you know why it must be so. Do you not see that I suffer as well?” Dr. Talbot answered. “To think of that man, putting his hands all over my very own Daisy whenever he feels.”

“My love! It isn't so, as you well know. We sleep in separate rooms and your prescriptions for my health have kept him well away.”

Virginia rested her weight heavily on the cabinet to her side, too shocked to do anything but continue listening. Although she had suspected Dr. Talbot of further involvement with Mrs. Hayes than was proper, she could not believe how disrespectfully they spoke of Mr. Hayes. That he should be duped by them in his own home! It was too horrible—Dr. Talbot was too horrible.

“Please Augustus, do not torment me by pretending you think me unfaithful!”

Mrs. Hayes' voice was now raised, no longer the secretive whisper she had started with. Dr. Talbot quieted her as best he could. Virginia could hear murmurs and rustling through the open doorway and her eyes darted around the room, looking for an escape. But here was no other exit from the dressing room, and so she was forced to wait in suspenseful silence, praying that they might leave soon.

The sound of soft sighs and whimpers now trailed out from the outer room. Virginia clutched at her bodice and tried to remain calm. They could not seriously do anything in the middle of the day, with Mr.
